The Assam government has unveiled a major initiative to strengthen education in tea garden communities by opening 80 additional schools in remote plantation areas. This expansion builds on previous efforts that saw nearly 25 schools recently upgraded to higher secondary levels.
These new institutions aim to reduce dropout rates, especially among girls, by providing secondary and higher secondary education close to home a critical step, as students often had to commute long distances previously . The state has also provincialised over 400 tea garden‑managed schools, ensuring they now receive free textbooks, uniforms, midday meals, and government-appointed teachers.
In addition to infrastructure development, nutrition and learning support remain priorities. Many schools in these regions provide eggs thrice weekly and include millet in midday meals, while modern amenities like labs and smart classrooms are gradually being introduced. Education officials expect these steps to promote better attendance, retention, and overall empowerment of tea garden communities.
