Astronaut Sunita Williams recently shared her unique experience aboard the International Space Station (ISS) during a conversation with her alma mater. When asked what microgravity felt like, she compared it to the sensation of swimming or flying. Williams explained that she has been trying to recall the sensation of walking, as she has been in space for so long. Interestingly, she mentioned that she has not sat down or fallen asleep during her time in space, adding, “You can simply close your eyes and float right here.”
Williams, along with astronaut Butch Wilmore, had initially expected their trip to space to last longer than eight days, but the unexpected delay resulted in an extended stay. "It was a little bit of a shock, actually," Williams recalled. The astronauts had anticipated the mission would take around a month, but the extended stay was something they hadn't planned for.
Despite the challenges, Williams expressed her joy about her time in space and the opportunity to communicate her experiences to everyone back on Earth. However, being so far from her family has had an impact on her relationships, particularly with her aging mother. Williams mentioned that she tries to stay in touch with her family as much as possible, and she speaks with her mother almost daily to check on her well-being. This change in her family dynamics has altered their relationship, making her more mindful of the importance of communication and staying connected, even from the vastness of space.
Williams continues to enjoy her time in space, sharing her journey with the world while staying closely connected with those she loves on Earth.
