Renowned for its lush tea plantations, tranquil lake, and rich biodiversity, Mattupetty offers a harmonious blend of natural beauty and adventure, making it a favored spot for travelers seeking respite amidst nature.
At the heart of Mattupetty lies the Mattupetty Dam, a concrete gravity dam. Originally built for water conservation and hydroelectric power generation, the dam has since become a popular picnic spot. The reservoir, known as Mattupetty Lake, is surrounded by rolling hills and tea plantations, providing a serene setting for visitors.
The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) of Idukki offers boating facilities on the lake, including speed launches, slow-speed boats, and motorboats, allowing tourists to immerse themselves in the tranquil waters while enjoying the scenic vistas.
Beyond its scenic landscapes, Mattupetty is also home to the Indo-Swiss Dairy Farm, also known as the Livestock Project. Established in 1963 as a collaboration between the governments of India and Switzerland, the farm is dedicated to cattle breeding and houses various high-yielding cattle breeds. The sprawling meadows of the farm, dotted with grazing cattle, add to the pastoral charm of Mattupetty.
The dense shola forests surrounding Mattupetty are home to exotic bird species, and it's not uncommon to spot elephants and other wildlife near the reservoir, especially during the early morning or late afternoon hours.
For adventure seekers, the rugged terrains around Mattupetty offer opportunities for trekking and camping. Trails meander through dense forests and rolling hills, providing trekkers with panoramic views of the Western Ghats and encounters with the region's rich biodiversity.
