Skywatchers in India are in for a celestial treat as June's full moon, known as the Strawberry Moon, will illuminate the night sky on Wednesday, June 11. While the name doesn’t imply a pink hue, it originates from Native American traditions, marking the strawberry harvest season.
What makes this year’s moon special is that it will be the lowest full moon in nearly 20 years, caused by a rare phenomenon called a major lunar standstill. This event, which occurs every 18.6 years, gives the moon a golden glow as it rises and sets at its most extreme points on the horizon.
In India, the best time to watch is just after sunset, when the moon appears low in the southeastern sky. Find a dark, open space with minimal light pollution for the clearest view. For an enhanced experience, use binoculars or a telescope - and don’t forget your camera!
