Abhishek Kapoor's latest Bollywood offering, Azaad, saw slight improvement in its box office performance on its first Sunday. According to early estimates by Sacnilk.com, the film earned ₹1.85 crore on day three, taking its total domestic earnings to ₹4.65 crore. Despite the modest numbers, Azaad achieved the distinction of being the highest opener for a newcomer-led film since the pandemic.
The movie marks the Bollywood debut of Aaman Devgan, nephew of Ajay Devgn, and Rasha Thadani, daughter of Raveena Tandon. Produced by RSVP Movies, the film opened with ₹1.5 crore on day one, followed by ₹1.3 crore on its second day. On Sunday, it recorded an 11.66% Hindi occupancy, reflecting marginal growth.
The Hindustan Times review notes mixed responses, praising the newcomers’ potential while acknowledging their inexperience. At 19, Rasha Thadani displays screen presence but struggles with emotional scenes, while Aaman Devgan shows promise in action and dance sequences but needs acting refinement. Ajay Devgn’s performance, reminiscent of his role in RRR, and Diana Penty’s underdeveloped storyline also received criticism.
While Azaad has its flaws, the debut performances and gradual box office growth hint at the potential for a stronger second-weekend run.
