A tense cloud looms over Bhadrak district, Odisha, after 45-year-old Santosh Parida died from injuries sustained during a violent clash on May 30, as locals confronted cattle smugglers. Shockwaves spread when internet services were suspended on June 12 in Bhadrak town, Tihidi, and Dhamnagar blocks - an official move aimed at curbing unrest.
Police Superintendent Manoj Rout revealed that Parida was attacked after opposing illegal cattle transport; 12 suspects have been arrested, including the key accused, with more at large. Additional security forces have been deployed to pre-empt any flare-up as tensions simmer .
Chief Minister Mohan Majhi announced a ₹10 lakh ex‑gratia and a government job for a family member, promising stern action against the perpetrators . The chilling reminder of how cattle smuggling troubles rural Odisha, along with the May pickup-van crash involving 30 cattle during a smuggler chase, highlights the region's ongoing challenges.
With digital silence descending over key Bhadrak zones, local authorities are walking a tightrope - trying to maintain calm while navigating community rage, law enforcement obligations, and rising tensions over illegal cattle trade.
