At least six people lost their lives and over 30 were injured in a tragic stampede at the Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao, Goa, early Saturday morning. Thousands had gathered for the annual Lairai Zatra festival, renowned for its fiery rituals and massive footfall from Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. The stampede unfolded during the pre-dawn hours as devotees prepared for the ritual fire-walking ceremony, leaving eight critically injured and many rushed to Goa Medical College and Hospital. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed deep sorrow, assuring full support to victims and their families while confirming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had personally extended his assistance.

The Lairai Jatra, famous for its circular dances, bonfire lighting, and barefoot ember-walking, is a cherished tradition drawing immense crowds annually.
