While addressing the 11th convocation of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly, President Droupadi Murmu emphasized the need to reframe how society perceives animals, stating that calling them ‘pashu’ (a generic term for animals) is inappropriate. Instead, she advocated using the term ‘jeevan dhan’, meaning wealth of life, to highlight their value in the ecosystem and in human livelihoods.
President Murmu underscored the deep connection between humans and animals, particularly in rural India, where animals are essential to agriculture, nutrition, and economic well-being. She praised the veterinary community for their role in animal health, public welfare, and sustainable development.
Calling for a more respectful and compassionate outlook towards animals, she urged young veterinary graduates to be guardians of animal welfare and contribute to a future where human-animal coexistence is guided by empathy and science.
Her statement resonated with the growing movement toward ethical treatment of animals and environmental consciousness.
