CJI Gavai declines any Post-retirement Government role!

Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai has publicly announced that he will not accept any government position post-retirement, reaffirming his commitment to maintaining the independence, impartiality, and credibility of the judiciary. Speaking at a felicitation event in his native village, Darapur in Amravati district, Gavai stated, “I have decided that I will not accept any government position after my retirement… I will try to spend more time in Darapur, Amravati and Nagpur.” He retires on November 23, 2025.

Earlier, on May 24, CJI Gavai had joined fellow retiring Justice Abhay S. Oka in declaring before an open court that neither of them would take up any post-retirement assignments. He emphasized that post-retirement appointments or electoral pursuits by judges raise “significant ethical concerns” and risk undermining public trust in the judiciary.

Gavai’s stance builds on a broader pledge by senior judges across the apex court to refrain from accepting appointments or contesting elections after retirement, a move aimed at reinforcing the critical principle that judicial decisions remain free from future political or executive influence.
