Taylor Swift’s concerts aren’t just record-breaking for ticket sales, they’re shaking the ground too. In July 2023, her Seattle show registered a 2.3 magnitude “SwiftQuake.” Since then, researchers have been curious: can Swifties really cause earthquakes?
Ahead of Swift’s three-night run in Dublin, scientists from the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and Trinity College set up 42 seismometers around Aviva Stadium. They found the crowd’s synchronized jumps during hits like Love Story and Shake It Off produced measurable seismic activity.
The strongest signals came during Love Story’s final chorus, when tens of thousands jumped together. Even more surprising, vibrations from Shake It Off were detected over 62 miles away by Ireland’s official seismic stations.
Though these tremors don’t qualify as full-fledged earthquakes, they prove that human energy on such a massive scale can mimic seismic events. Beyond the fun science, the project nicknamed SwiftQuakeDublin, engaged thousands online. Fans even sent in 300+ videos, helping scientists match crowd movement to seismic data.
In the end, Taylor Swift may not literally move mountains, but she and her fans, certainly make the Earth shake.
