Convicted Rapist’s Mother Breaks Silence: ‘I’ll Cry, But Let Him Hang’

Kolkata has been shaken by the heinous crime involving Sanjoy Roy, convicted for the brutal rape and murder of an on-duty medic at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. As the city awaits the court's verdict on his punishment, scheduled for January 20, Roy's family has come forward with a stark and emotional response.

Roy's 70-year-old mother, breaking her silence after his conviction, expressed profound anguish yet unwavering faith in the justice system. “If the court decides to hang him, I have no objection. I will cry alone but accept it as destiny,” she said. As a mother of three daughters, she empathized deeply with the victim's family, understanding their pain.

Roy's sister echoed similar sentiments, stating that the family has no intention of challenging the court's decision. “The law should take its own course. We've already faced immense stigma since his arrest,” she said. Living away from her family since her marriage in 2007, she recounted the societal shame they endured as people labeled them “Sanjoy's kin.”

The court's ruling, convicting Roy on January 18, carries a possible punishment ranging from life imprisonment to capital punishment. The family's candid admission of accepting justice, regardless of its severity, reflects the broader societal outrage against such crimes.

This case highlights not only the brutal crime but also the enduring trauma and isolation faced by families of offenders, who often bear the brunt of societal judgment.
