The appointment of Gyanesh Kumar as India's Chief Election Commissioner has sparked political controversy, with Congress accusing the BJP-led government of rushing the decision to sidestep Supreme Court scrutiny.
Gyanesh Kumar, a 1988 batch Kerala cadre IAS officer, previously served as the Cooperation Ministry Secretary and played a key role in the Home Ministry during the abrogation of Article 370. His term as CEC will last until January 26, 2029.
Congress general secretary KC Venugopal criticized the government for making the appointment ahead of the Supreme Court hearing on the selection panel's structure. He claimed the move undermines electoral integrity and fuels suspicion over the ruling party’s influence on the process.
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who was part of the selection panel, objected to the timing of the decision and submitted a dissent note. The meeting, led by Prime Minister Modi and attended by Home Minister Amit Shah, took place just before the court's scheduled hearing on February 19.
