As millions gather for the Maha Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj, a sacred event where devotees immerse in the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati, a troubling discovery emerges.
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reports that the river waters at Triveni Sangam fail to meet bathing quality standards due to alarmingly high levels of faecal coliform bacteria, indicators of sewage contamination.
The bacteria levels exceed the permissible limit of 2,500 units per 100 milliliters, casting a shadow over the spiritual sanctity of the festival.
Over 54.31 crore devotees have participated since January 13, relying on the holy dip to cleanse their souls. However, the revelation exposes them to potential waterborne diseases.
The CPCB report, submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), confirms that all monitored locations show unsafe faecal coliform concentrations. The rising contamination is linked to the heavy influx of pilgrims, which strains the local sewage systems.
The NGT has expressed concern about the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board’s (UPPCB) failure to act and demanded an immediate action plan. As the festival continues, the contrast between spiritual devotion and environmental risks becomes glaring.
The question looms: can the sanctity of the Maha Kumbh be preserved without compromising public health? Swift intervention by authorities is crucial to ensure the rivers' purity and the safety of those seeking spiritual salvation.
