In a notable diplomatic gesture, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has officially nominated former U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, praising his role in brokering peace agreements in the Middle East. The announcement came during a dinner meeting at the White House on Monday, where Netanyahu handed Trump a copy of the nomination letter sent to the Nobel Committee.
Netanyahu lauded Trump for orchestrating the Abraham Accords, which normalized diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab nations, including the UAE and Bahrain. He said Trump is currently “forging peace in one country, in one region after another,” and described the nomination as “well deserved.”
The move is expected to spark strong reactions both in support and opposition, especially given Trump’s polarizing legacy in global diplomacy. Nonetheless, Netanyahu’s nomination adds international weight to Trump’s previous nominations, which were put forth by several European politicians during his presidency.
The Nobel Peace Prize nominations are confidential but may be disclosed by the nominators themselves. The final decision rests with the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
