Even legal immigrants aren’t safe now—Trump’s policy is back with a twist!

A U.S. district judge has upheld the Trump administration’s policy requiring all immigrants-regardless of legal status-to carry valid immigration documents at all times. This includes Indian nationals on H-1B visas and international students, who are typically already registered with U.S. authorities. Under the new rule, being registered isn’t enough-individuals must have their documentation with them round the clock.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) clarified that the rule applies to all noncitizens aged 18 and above. Additionally, children are not exempt: they must re-register and submit fingerprints within 30 days after turning 14. This move is part of a broader enforcement push that promises no sanctuary for noncompliance.

While holders of green cards, valid visas, and employment authorizations won’t be required to re-register, they must still be prepared to present documents on demand. The court dismissed a legal challenge from immigrant rights groups, saying the plaintiffs failed to prove the policy would harm their core missions.

Legal experts and immigrant advocates have criticized the ruling, warning that it puts even lawful residents at risk of detention or deportation for minor lapses. The decision has raised concerns about civil liberties and the intensifying scrutiny faced by legal immigrants in the U.S.
