Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has slammed the Modi government, stating that “everyone knows India is a dead economy - except for Prime Minister Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.” His remarks come in the wake of Donald Trump’s recent statement on Truth Social where the former U.S. President described India and Russia as “dead economies.”
Speaking at a press conference in Delhi on July 31, Gandhi accused the BJP of mismanaging the Indian economy, saying, “What Donald Trump is saying is what global investors have been whispering for years now - India's growth story is a façade under this regime.”
He criticized the government’s silence over Trump’s comment, adding that the Prime Minister “only responds when it suits his PR optics.”
The Finance Ministry has not issued an official response, while BJP leaders dismissed both Trump and Gandhi’s statements as “politically motivated.”
This marks a rare moment where a major Indian opposition leader has publicly sided with a controversial foreign remark.
