Gukesh D: India’s Young Chess Star Bags the Khel Ratna Award

India’s youngest-ever World Chess Champion, Gukesh D, has added another feather to his cap! The Ministry of Sports has honored the 18-year-old with the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, the highest sporting honor in the country. This recognition comes after Gukesh's historic win, making him the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to claim the World Chess Championship title.

The Rise of a Champion

Born in Chennai in 2006, Gukesh discovered chess at the age of seven—quite late for a prodigy. But once he started, there was no looking back. His school, part of the Velammal group, introduced him to the game, and within just six months, he became a FIDE-rated player.

By 2015, Gukesh had started making headlines, winning the Asian School Chess Championships and earning his Candidate Master (CM) title. Over the years, he bagged multiple gold medals at events like the Asian Youth Chess Championships and the World Youth Chess Championships.

At just 12 years old, Gukesh earned the title of International Master, and by 2023, he became India’s top-ranked chess player, ending Vishwanathan Anand’s incredible 37-year reign.

The Big Win

Gukesh made history by defeating reigning champion Ding Liren of China to become the World Chess Champion. After a nail-biting match that stretched into its fifth hour, Gukesh emerged victorious with a score of 7.5-6.5. Overcome with emotion, Gukesh said, “I’ve dreamed of this moment for the last 10 years. Turning it into reality is a dream come true.”

A Proud Moment

After his big win, a heartwarming video of Gukesh’s father, Dr. Rajinikanth, went viral. Watching the match on his phone, he rushed to hug his son upon realizing his victory, a moment that melted hearts across the nation.

Why It Matters

Gukesh’s story is not just about winning medals. It’s about hard work, focus, and chasing your dreams. Now, with the Khel Ratna Award, he has cemented his place as one of India’s brightest stars.

His journey inspires millions, proving that age is no barrier when passion drives you. Gukesh is not just making chess cool for Gen Z—he’s showing everyone how far dedication can take you!
