How South Indian jewellery reflects regional identity and pride!

South Indian jewellery is not just about glitter and gold-it's a vibrant expression of tradition, identity, and artistry passed down through generations.

The history of this jewellery traces back to ancient dynasties like the Cholas, Pandyas, and Vijayanagara Empire, where ornaments weren’t just decorative-they were royal symbols of power, prosperity, and devotion. Temple art played a key role, inspiring the famous Temple Jewellery, featuring gods and goddesses carved in gold, worn by classical dancers and deities alike.

Each region in the South contributed its unique style. Tamil Nadu introduced Kaasu Malai (coin necklaces) and Oddiyanam (waistbands); Kerala is known for Mullamottu Mala (jasmine bud necklaces); Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh popularized Nakshi work and Kemp stones, blending precious gems with intricate gold patterns.

Worn during weddings, festivals like Onam and Pongal, or passed down as heirlooms, South Indian jewellery carries deep spiritual and social meaning. Even men wear ornaments like chains and rings during rituals.

Today, with Bollywood and celebrities flaunting these iconic pieces, South Indian jewellery continues to evolve-but its soul remains rooted in heritage. It’s not just jewellery-it’s a living legacy crafted in gold.
