India and France sealed a monumental Rs 63,000 crore deal on April 28, 2025, for 26 Rafale-M fighter jets, enhancing the Indian Navy's maritime prowess. The agreement, signed in Delhi, includes 22 single-seater and four twin-seater jets, set to be deployed on INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya. This deal, finalized after Cabinet Committee approval on April 9, bolsters India's defense capabilities in the Indo-Pacific, countering regional tensions, particularly with Pakistan. The Rafale-M, equipped for carrier operations, offers advanced avionics and weaponry, with deliveries expected by 2031.
The deal also supports India's Make in India initiative through offset provisions, ensuring local manufacturing. With maintenance, logistics, and training included, this acquisition elevates India's naval strength, making it one of only two South Asian nations capable of operating such advanced carrier-based aircraft, alongside China.
