A recent systematic review published in BMC Public Health reveals that engaging in sedentary behavior for over six hours daily significantly elevates the risk of developing neck pain. The study analyzed data from 25 studies encompassing more than 43,000 participants across 13 countries. Sedentary behavior was defined as seated activities with low energy expenditure, particularly screen-based tasks such as using mobile phones, computers, and watching television.
Among these activities, mobile phone use posed the highest risk, increasing the likelihood of neck pain by 82%, followed by computer use at 23%. Interestingly, watching television did not show a significant association with neck pain. Overall, sitting for more than six hours daily raised the risk of neck pain by nearly 88% compared to non-sedentary individuals.
The researchers attribute the rise in sedentary habits to lifestyle changes, the widespread use of electronic devices, and the shift to online work following the COVID-19 pandemic. Poor posture during prolonged device use can lead to tension in the neck and upper back muscles, disrupting their balance and potentially causing musculoskeletal issues.
