India, known for its rapid highway expansion in recent years, is witnessing a slowdown in road construction in 2024. The government has set a target of building only 10,000 kilometers of highways this year, the lowest since 2019.
This has raised questions about the reasons behind the reduced pace and its impact on the country's infrastructure growth.
In recent years, India has made significant progress in road construction, with the government completing over 12,000–13,000 km annually.
However, the new target of 10,000 km reflects a decline, possibly due to funding constraints, land acquisition delays, and rising construction costs. Experts suggest that inflation, higher material costs, and delays in approvals have contributed to the slowdown.
Despite the lower target, officials assure that quality over quantity remains the priority.
The focus is shifting towards improving existing roads, strengthening bridges, and ensuring sustainable construction practices. With elections around the corner, political and administrative factors may also be influencing the decision.
For commuters and businesses, this could mean slower expansion of highways, affecting logistics and connectivity. However, the government remains confident that India's road network will continue to improve, even if at a slightly reduced speed this year.
As the year progresses, all eyes will be on how efficiently these 10,000 km of highways are constructed and whether India can regain its momentum in infrastructure development.
