A tragic incident struck central Gaza on July 13, 2025, as an Israeli missile—which IDF claims was intended for an Islamic Jihad militant—landed near a water collection point in the Nuseirat refugee camp. The strike tragically killed eight Palestinians, most of them children who were collecting water amid crippling shortages, and wounded more than a dozen others.
The IDF confirmed that the missile malfunctioned, falling “dozens of metres” from its intended target, and expressed regret for the civilian loss, stating the event is under review. According to Dr. Ahmed Abu Saifan at Al‑Awda Hospital, "many came in with shrapnel injuries and severe burns" as they queued for water, a vital but rare resource due to failing sanitation and desalination facilities in Gaza.
Later that day, a separate Israeli airstrike struck a market in Gaza City, killing 12 more people, including a senior hospital consultant, Ahmad Qandil. Gaza’s Health Ministry reported the total conflict death toll has now passed 58,000, with women and children accounting for more than half of the casualties.
Ceasefire negotiations in Doha have since stalled, hampered by disagreements over Israeli troop withdrawal and security terms. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu remains firm on securing full Hamas demilitarization, the release of hostages, and a lasting safeguard for Israel. Meanwhile, the ongoing crisis in Gaza deepens, with fuel and water shortages compounding civilian suffering amid intensifying military operations.
