Several pro-Kannada groups have called for a 12-hour bandh in Karnataka on March 22, protesting the alleged assault of a KSRTC bus conductor in Belagavi. The conductor was reportedly attacked for not speaking Marathi, reigniting the longstanding linguistic dispute between Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that the Siddaramaiah government does not support the bandh, citing concerns about disruptions, especially for students in the middle of their exams. However, security forces are on high alert in Belagavi and other sensitive areas, anticipating potential unrest.
The attack has led to the suspension of inter-state bus services between Karnataka and Maharashtra, further straining relations. With linguistic tensions escalating, the bandh is expected to impact commuters, businesses, and daily life across the state. Authorities urge caution as Karnataka braces for another chapter in its ongoing language battle.
