On Saturday morning, a major technical glitch disrupted UPI services across India, affecting millions of users relying on platforms like Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay. The outage, which extended to banks including HDFC, SBI, and Kotak Mahindra, caused massive inconvenience for individuals and businesses alike.
Over 1,100 complaints were reported by noon, with many unable to complete routine financial transactions.
This marks yet another incident in a series of recent UPI disruptions, raising serious concerns about the system’s reliability. While the NPCI has yet to identify the root cause, experts speculate server overloads or technical failures could be behind the failure.
The outage comes just days after NPCI announced new guidelines for international UPI usage. As India grows increasingly dependent on digital payments, experts stress the urgent need for a more resilient and secure infrastructure to prevent recurring service breakdowns. The digital economy, after all, can’t afford to go dark.
