New era begins: Shubman Gill replaces Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI Captain!

In a bold leadership transition, Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma for the upcoming three-match series in Australia. Supporting him, Shreyas Iyer has been named vice-captain for the series.

Despite being relieved of the captaincy, Rohit Sharma remains in the ODI squad, with Virat Kohli also making a return to India’s 50-over plans.  Both legends have already retired from Tests and T20Is and now focus solely on the ODI format.

Gill, who already captains India in Tests and serves as vice-captain in T20Is, will now assume full leadership of the ODI side. The move is viewed as a step toward preparing long-term leadership ahead of future ICC tournaments. Meanwhile, the squad balances experience and youth, with names like KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Prasidh Krishna featuring alongside newer faces.

As India heads into the tour Down Under, this shake-up signals the board’s intent to chart a new course while still leaning on the experience of its white-ball stalwarts.
