Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, appointed as the Chairman of the Standing Committee on External Affairs on September 26, 2024, may continue in his role for an additional two years. The Centre is considering extending the tenure of parliamentary standing committees from one year to two years, aiming to enhance continuity and allow for more thorough scrutiny of bills, reports, and policy matters.
This proposal holds particular significance for Tharoor, as the current committee terms were set to expire on September 26. If implemented, the extension would enable him to retain his position at the helm of the influential committee, despite recent differences with his party.
Tharoor's leadership has been instrumental in facilitating detailed discussions on India's foreign policy, including recent brefings on the Indo-US relationship. His continued chairmanship could further strengthen the committee's role in shaping India's diplomatic strategies.
The government's move to extend committee tenures reflects a broader effort to ensure more effective legislative oversight and policy analysis. If approved, this change could have lasting implications for parliamentary procedures and the functioning of key committees.
