Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 'Mission Mausam' on the 150th Foundation Day of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The goal? To make India better prepared for climate challenges and create a sustainable future.

PM Modi praised the IMD’s 150-year journey, calling it a testament to India's progress in science and technology. He said, “Advances in meteorology have boosted India’s disaster management and helped the world too.”

What Is Mission Mausam?

This new initiative focuses on improving India’s weather prediction systems. From high-tech radars and satellites to next-gen supercomputers, it’s all about tracking and understanding weather better. It also aims to provide detailed air quality data to help in long-term climate planning.

PM Modi emphasized how crucial meteorology is for disaster management. “To reduce the effects of natural disasters, we must strengthen our weather prediction systems,” he said. He also encouraged scientists to develop earthquake warning systems.

IMD’s Vision for the Future

The Prime Minister released the IMD Vision-2047 document, outlining plans for making India more weather-resilient. He highlighted the department’s modern facilities, including Doppler radars and automatic weather stations.

IMD and Makar Sankranti

PM Modi shared an interesting fact: IMD was founded on Makar Sankranti in 1875. He recalled fond memories of celebrating Uttarayan in Gujarat by flying kites. He said, “This festival symbolizes positivity as the Sun begins its northward journey.”

The event was attended by global dignitaries and Indian scientists. With Mission Mausam, PM Modi aims to make India a leader in climate readiness, showing the world that we’re ready to tackle any challenge nature throws at us.
