Prada just bought Versace. Fashion will never be the same.

In a landmark move shaking up the fashion world, Prada has officially acquired Versace for €1.25 billion. The merger brings together two of Italy’s most iconic fashion houses, but also two very different creative leaders: Miuccia Prada and Donatella Versace. While the brands remain creatively distinct, this merger unites their business ambitions under one luxury empire.

 

Miuccia Prada, known for her intellectual, minimalist approach, has long championed subversive elegance and political undertones in fashion. Donatella Versace, on the other hand, has been synonymous with bold glamour, celebrity culture, and unapologetic sensuality. The merger reflects not only a financial strategy but a symbolic coming together of two opposing philosophies that have defined modern fashion for decades.

 

Though Donatella is stepping down as Versace’s chief creative officer, she will stay on as chief brand ambassador—a role rarely held by designers and typically reserved for celebrities. Replacing her is Dario Vitale, formerly of Miu Miu, marking a significant shift for the house’s creative direction.

 

Despite their aesthetic differences, Prada’s leadership emphasized that the lack of creative overlap is a strength. The acquisition aims to diversify Prada Group’s portfolio without internal competition, reinforcing its position as a serious player in the global luxury market.

 

This merger highlights the evolution of fashion from artistic vision to powerhouse industry. While Prada and Versace will continue operating under their distinct identities, their combined legacy and business acumen could shape the next chapter of Italian fashion dominance.
