After years on the run, fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi was arrested in Antwerp on April 12, 2025, following a detailed extradition request by the CBI. Choksi, wanted in India for defrauding Punjab National Bank and facing charges of embezzlement, bribery, and forgery, was tracked by CBI's Global Operations Centre during his medical visit to Belgium.
Unlike Dominica, where India failed to deport him in 2021 due to lack of a treaty, Belgium and India have had an extradition agreement since 1901. CBI ensured all procedures were followed meticulously, invoking IPC sections and UN conventions on corruption. Belgium confirmed dual criminality, leading to an arrest order in November 2024.
Though delayed due to his hospital visits, Choksi was finally detained and is expected to be presented in Antwerp's court shortly. India remains confident, as he holds no Belgian citizenship, making extradition highly probable.
