In a shocking blunder, four railway officials from the Alipurduar division were suspended when a dilapidated, unhygienic train was dispatched to transport Border Security Force (BSF) personnel from Tripura to Jammu & Kashmir for Amarnath Yatra duty . The rickety coaches - with broken windows, malfunctioning toilets, and grimy interiors - were slammed as "unfit for human travel" after footage shared by jawans went viral .
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed deep regret, confirming the train was immediately swapped for a clean, suitable rake and announcing disciplinary action against three senior section engineers and one coaching depot officer . A high-level inquiry has been ordered to determine how such unworthy coaches were allocated to security personnel, prompting outrage from both public and political figures .
The incident has sparked demands for systemic reforms to maintain basic standards in troop transportation, with critics warning this fiasco undermines the dignity and morale of frontline personnel. With the Amarnath Yatra seeing deployment of thousands of BSF jawans, authorities now face pressure to ensure that such lapses are never repeated.
