Reviving Pashmina, reimagining futures — women-led fashion is reshaping Kashmir

In the heart of Kashmir, a quiet revolution is unfolding—one that intertwines tradition, empowerment, and sustainable fashion. As global fashion trends shift towards sustainability and ethical practices, Kashmir's rich artisanal heritage is experiencing a renaissance, led predominantly by women entrepreneurs. This movement is not just about preserving age-old crafts but also about redefining the region's socio-economic landscape.

Historically renowned for its exquisite Pashmina wool, intricate Tilla embroidery, and traditional Pherans, Kashmir's crafts have long been symbols of cultural identity. However, decades of conflict and economic challenges had cast a shadow over these traditions. Today, visionaries like Iqra Ahmad, founder of the luxury fashion label Tul Palav, are breathing new life into these crafts. Transitioning from academia to design, Ahmad exemplifies how personal passion can drive broader societal change, transforming Kashmir's craft ecosystem into a hub of entrepreneurship with profound cultural and economic implications.

Central to this revival is the empowerment of women. In a region where formal employment opportunities are scarce, fashion and craft enterprises offer avenues for women's economic inclusion. Through mentorship programs, peer learning, and internships, these initiatives equip women with the skills and confidence to lead in the fashion sector. This not only fosters individual growth but also strengthens community bonds and promotes cultural preservation.
