Menopause brings many unexpected changes, and one of them is acne. While most people associate acne with teenage years, some women face breakouts during perimenopause and even after menopause. The good news is that these blemishes can be managed effectively with the right approach.
What Causes Acne During Menopause?
As estrogen levels drop during menopause, the balance of male hormones called androgens increases. These hormones stimulate the skin's oil production, which can clog pores and lead to acne. The increase in sebum, combined with bacteria and dead skin cells, can result in pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads, especially in the T-zone.
Genetics also plays a role. If acne ran in your family, you might be more prone to develop breakouts during menopause. However, diet is not a major cause of menopause-related acne, though a balanced diet is always beneficial for skin health.
How to Treat Acne During Menopause
For mild cases, start with a simple skincare routine. Use an acne-specific facial cleanser with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to control oil and fight bacteria. Over-the-counter spot treatments containing adapalene can help reduce existing blemishes and prevent new ones.
Avoid touching or picking at acne to prevent scarring and irritation. Also, choose non-comedogenic makeup and oil-free sunscreen to protect your skin without clogging pores.
If over-the-counter treatments don't work, consult a dermatologist for personalized care. Taking the right steps can help you manage menopause-related acne and maintain healthy skin throughout this transition.
