In a remote village nestled amidst misty hills of Meghalaya, Genavafa Behphat carried a silent struggle: in school, she could read English but couldn’t speak it prompting her to abandon political science and navigate life with effort rather than fluency. Determined that other children shouldn’t face the same obstacle, she began offering weekend English classes and setting up community libraries. By 2019, she transformed her modest home into Dew Drop Academy serving just 15 learners in a storeroom, taught by her sister and cousin, with affordable fees.
When the pandemic struck, Genavafa’s resolve didn’t waver. With support from Sunbird Trust and local donations, she built a proper school on land gifted by relatives, carved access roads, and added transport making education reachable for 241 children across 11 villages. Today, the academy is more than a school it’s a vibrant, nurturing community. Through capacity-building, local teacher recruitment, and trust-driven pedagogy, Genavafa is equipping children not just with English, but with the courage to dream beyond their village. boundaries
