The US Department of Homeland Security has submitted a proposal to the White House for reintroducing biometric tracking rules, including facial recognition for individuals entering and exiting America. The rule, expected as an interim final measure, revives a Trump-era proposal requiring all non-citizens to be photographed at border crossings.
Currently, DHS collects biometric data from certain non-citizen groups at specific air and sea ports. The expanded system would make the process uniform and nationwide, enhancing immigration enforcement capabilities.
Civil rights groups previously opposed the 2020 proposal, citing technology errors and potential over-criminalization of people of color. The regulation would significantly expand government surveillance and exit-entry tracking of non-citizens if approved by the White House.
