Social media often reshapes what we consider “normal,” turning ordinary choices into seemingly necessary benchmarks. Three trends are particularly unhealthy.
1. Monetizing hobbies: Hobbies are meant for joy and relaxation. Yet, online, they are often shown as potential side hustles, pressuring people to turn passions into profit. Studies show happiness doesn’t depend on monetization; many find more joy in simply enjoying their craft.
2. Constant traveling: Travel is celebrated for refreshment and growth, but social media fosters “travel dysmorphia”—feeling behind if you’re not constantly exploring. Research reveals emotional satisfaction peaks with meaningful trips, not sheer frequency.
3. Quitting jobs for freedom: Influencers glamorize leaving stable employment to chase passions. However, studies show meaningful work can be achieved without quitting by reshaping roles and mindset. True freedom comes from personal fulfillment, not imitation.
Ultimately, social media can distort reality. Hobbies, travel, and career choices should reflect personal joy and well-being, not the curated ideals online. Mindful decision-making matters more than following trends.
