Channapatna toys are bright, wooden toys made in the small town of Channapatna in Karnataka, India. These handcrafted toys have been around for over 200 years and are loved by children and collectors alike.
The history of these toys goes back to the rule of Tipu Sultan in the 18th century. He was fascinated by wooden toys from Persia and encouraged artisans in Channapatna to learn the craft. Over time, the toy-making tradition became a part of the town's identity.
Channapatna toys are made from a special kind of wood called ivory wood, which is soft and easy to carve.
The toys are painted with natural colors made from vegetable dyes, making them safe for children. The smooth, glossy finish comes from using a special polishing technique with lacquer.
The designs of these toys have changed over time. Earlier, they were simple dolls and spinning tops, but now artisans also create puzzles, keychains, and home décor items. Many toy makers are also adding modern touches while keeping the traditional craftsmanship alive.
In 2006, Channapatna toys received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, recognizing their unique origin. Even today, they are famous worldwide for their beauty and eco-friendliness.
Despite challenges from plastic toys, Channapatna artisans continue to make these lovely wooden toys, keeping a centuries-old tradition alive.
