Hidden in the heart of Delhi, Lodhi Garden's walls hold stories that transcend time. What was once a historical landmark filled with tombs of the Lodhi dynasty has now evolved into an extraordinary open-air gallery, where the past and present collide in stunning artistry. But what secrets do these painted walls truly hide?
Dating back to the 15th century, Lodhi Garden was a symbol of royal grandeur, with magnificent structures like the Bara Gumbad, built in 1494 under Sikander Lodhi. These walls bore intricate designs reflecting a confluence of culture and spirituality. Centuries later, they have been reborn—not with ancient carvings but with bold, thought-provoking murals that demand attention.
The transformation began in 2015 when the Lodhi Art District was born the first open-air art district in India. More than 50 artists from across the world turned the once-plain walls into canvases of revolution, addressing themes of environmental crises, social justice, and identity. Spearheaded by the St+art India Foundation, this initiative turned forgotten structures into a breathtaking fusion of history and modern expression.
But are these murals just art, or do they hold deeper meanings? Some say they are coded messages, echoes of the past speaking to the present. Others believe they symbolize Delhi's unstoppable evolution. One thing is certain every brushstroke hides a story waiting to be uncovered.
Next time you walk through Lodhi Garden, don't just look. Observe. Listen. The walls might just whisper their secrets to you.
