Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of the Amber region, wasn't just a warrior or ruler - he was a scholar, mathematician, and passionate astronomer. With growing population and water scarcity in Amber, he decided to shift his capital and build a new city from scratch. But instead of letting it grow chaotically, he chose to design it scientifically, blending ancient Indian architectural principles with practical urban planning.
He commissioned Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, a Bengali architect well-versed in Shilpa Shastra and Vastu Shastra, to help design the city. Together, they created a grid system layout, wide straight roads, uniform structures, public squares, markets, and drainage systems—features rarely seen in Indian towns of that time.
What sets Jaipur apart is how it balances beauty with function. The city was painted in pink in 1876 to welcome the Prince of Wales, earning its famous nickname: The Pink City.
Today, Jaipur stands not only as a vibrant tourist hub but also as a testament to India's rich legacy of science, design, and vision—all shaped by a ruler who looked to the stars while laying the foundations on the ground.
