In Hinduism, the practice of tying the hair into a knot or braid, known as Shikha or Choti, holds both spiritual and cultural significance.
Originating from the Vedic tradition, it is a symbol of devotion, cleanliness, and spiritual focus. According to Hindu beliefs, the Shikha is tied on the crown of the head, which is the seat of the Sahasrara chakra, believed to be a vital point for spiritual awakening and energy flow.
For Brahmins, the Shikha is tied after a young boy undergoes the Upanayana ceremony, where a small portion of hair is left on the crown following a head shave. It is maintained tied throughout life, except during specific occasions like mourning or bathing.
The practice is associated with personal sacrifice and connecting to the divine, enhancing one's concentration, spiritual growth, and mental clarity. The Shikha is a crucial link between the earthly and divine realms, embodying both religious and scientific benefits.
