In Mount Abu, Rajasthan, there’s a kitchen that’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Located inside the Shantivan campus of Brahma Kumaris, this kitchen is the world’s largest solar-powered kitchen. And the most amazing part? It cooks food for 50,000 people every day - without using gas, coal, or electricity!
The kitchen uses 84 large solar reflectors called Scheffler dishes. These reflectors follow the movement of the sun and concentrate its heat to produce steam. This steam is then used to cook food, boil water, and even clean utensils.
Even if it’s cloudy or rainy, there’s a small diesel backup system - but most of the time, the sun does all the work. Thanks to this setup, the kitchen saves over 1.18 lakh liters of diesel every year, making it eco-friendly and cost-effective.
Built in 1998 with support from the Indian government, this kitchen is a great example of how solar energy can power big ideas - and fill thousands of stomachs without harming the planet.
