UPSC exams open the gateway to some of India’s most prestigious services: IAS, IFS, IPS, IES, and ISS. Each service has its unique roles, responsibilities, and perks.
IAS (Indian Administrative Service) is considered the top service in terms of power and influence. IAS officers handle administration across districts, states, and central government. They implement policies, manage development projects, and even handle disaster relief. With positions ranging from District Collector to Cabinet Secretary, IAS officers have the highest administrative authority.
IFS (Indian Foreign Service) represents India abroad. Officers work in embassies, handle diplomacy, and negotiate international agreements. They enjoy foreign allowances and global exposure but follow a different hierarchy than IAS.
IPS (Indian Police Service) leads the police and law enforcement agencies. They ensure public safety, investigate crimes, and maintain law and order.
IES (Economics & Engineering) and ISS are specialist services, advising on economic policies, engineering projects, and data research.
In terms of overall power and prestige, IAS is at the top, followed by IFS, IPS, and then the specialist services. The choice ultimately depends on your interest and career goals.
