Heat-related illness, also known as hyperthermia, occurs when the body fails to cool itself effectively.
It ranges from mild conditions like heat rash and heat cramps to more serious forms such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat stroke, the most dangerous, can cause confusion, slurred speech, and even unconsciousness, requiring immediate medical attention.
These illnesses often happen during hot and humid weather or intense physical activity. Risk increases with dehydration, certain medications, and jobs involving outdoor labor. The body struggles to regulate temperature, leading to symptoms like dizziness, nausea, and high fever.
To prevent heat-related illness, it's crucial to stay hydrated, avoid overexertion in extreme heat, and take breaks in cool environments. Early recognition and treatment can prevent serious complications.
If you or someone else shows signs of heat exhaustion or stroke, seek emergency care immediately. Your awareness can save a life.
