US President Donald Trump voiced optimism, suggesting that a Gaza ceasefire between Israel and Hamas might be secured “within the next week.” He shared this while discussing a peace accord in the Congo–Rwanda region, stating he had been speaking with those involved in the negotiations and believed “it’s close”.
Trump’s remarks come amid an intensifying military campaign by Israel in Gaza, which has resulted in heavy civilian casualties—some days seeing dozens of deaths—as the humanitarian situation deteriorates. This follows a temporary truce with Iran that earlier this month raised hopes of broader regional engagement .
Preparations are underway for further diplomatic efforts: Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff have traveled to Washington and Cairo to advance talks. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Netanyahu is expected at the White House on July 7 to discuss ceasefire and hostage-release frameworks.
