The US government has issued a fresh travel advisory urging its citizens to exercise “increased caution” while traveling to India due to rising crime rates, including rape, terrorism threats, and limited emergency services in rural areas.
The advisory highlights that violent crimes, particularly sexual assaults, are increasingly reported at tourist sites.
It warns of potential terrorist attacks targeting transportation hubs, markets, government facilities, and public gatherings without prior warning.
The advisory specifically cautions against traveling to parts of central and eastern India, including regions across Maharashtra, Telangana, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Meghalaya, where Maoist extremist groups remain active.
US government employees must obtain prior approval before visiting these areas, including parts of Manipur and Jammu & Kashmir, citing ethnic conflicts and ongoing unrest.
The advisory emphasizes limited US government assistance in rural regions, advising travelers to remain vigilant and avoid high-risk locations.
