The Jagdambika Pal-led Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) is set to table its report on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in Parliament during the ongoing Budget Session. The bill seeks to introduce significant reforms to the Waqf Act, 1995, which has faced criticism for mismanagement, corruption, and encroachments on Waqf properties.
Key provisions of the amendment include digitisation of records, enhanced audits, legal mechanisms to reclaim illegally occupied properties, and ensuring that Waqf benefits reach marginalized groups such as the poor, women, and orphans. The JPC reviewed 44 clauses, proposing amendments in 14 of them, which were adopted through a majority vote.
However, the report has sparked controversy, particularly after AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi alleged that parts of his dissent note were redacted without his consent. He claimed that the deleted portions merely "stated facts" and accused JPC Chairman Jagdambika Pal of stifling opposition voices.
Despite these objections, the bill is expected to move forward in Parliament. Supporters argue that it modernizes Waqf property management and curbs corruption, while critics question whether it disproportionately benefits certain groups over others.
With political tensions rising, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 is set to be a major flashpoint in the coming parliamentary debates.
