Imagine you are running late for college and your usual route has heavy traffic, what would you choose: a cab or a bike ride? Will you stick to what tradition says, or will you experiment until you find what works best? This is called, Pragmatism.
Pragmatism is a way of thinking that focuses on what works in real life. Instead of arguing about big ideas or abstract theories, pragmatism asks, "Does this solve the problem?" It's a practical approach to life, where action and results matter more than endless debates.
The roots of pragmatism come from thinkers like Charles Sanders Peirce, who said the meaning of any idea lies in its practical effects. William James believed truth is something that works in practice, while John Dewey applied this idea to education and problem-solving.
For example, millions of people are displaced due to war or natural disasters. A pragmatic approach doesn't dwell on assigning blame or waiting for perfect global cooperation. Instead, countries and organizations focus on immediate, actionable solutions: setting up temporary shelters, providing food, and creating pathways for employment.
In India, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar is a perfect example of someone who followed a pragmatic philosophy. As the architect of the Indian Constitution and a champion for the rights of marginalized communities, Ambedkar didn't just dream of equality- he acted on it. He believed in making changes that worked on the ground. For instance, he advocated for education, labor rights, and the abolition of untouchability because these were practical steps to empower people and ensure social justice.
Pragmatism in big problems is about starting where we are, using what we have, and doing what we can.
