What would it cost India to officially become Bharat?

The debate around renaming India to Bharat has gained fresh momentum, but beyond the politics lies a practical question: how much will it cost?

According to estimates, the financial impact could touch ₹14,000 crore. The figure comes from comparing such renaming with large-scale corporate rebranding exercises, where expenses cover communication, documentation, and public outreach.

In India’s case, costs would include updating official documents, government stationery, school textbooks, road signs, railway boards, and digital systems. Everyday essentials like passports, currency notes, and ID cards would also need revision. Beyond government, businesses, private institutions, and global organisations would have to update records, contracts, and software.

To put this in perspective, renaming Allahabad to Prayagraj in 2018 cost the Uttar Pradesh government over ₹300 crore, and that was just one city. Now imagine the scale when it involves an entire nation of 1.4 billion people.

The number, ₹14,000 crore is roughly what the government spends every month on its food security programme. That comparison gives a sense of how massive this undertaking would be if “India” were officially replaced with “Bharat.”
