Who Are Aghori Babas and Why Do They Appear Only During Kumbh Mela?

Aghori Babas are one of the most mysterious and fascinating holy men in India. They are followers of Lord Shiva, particularly his fierce form, Bhairava. Known for their unconventional practices, Aghoris seek spiritual moksha (liberation) by transcending societal norms and embracing what others fear or reject.

They often live in cremation grounds, meditating on life and death, which they see as two sides of the same coin. They cover their bodies with ash from cremation fires and use human skulls as bowls or sacred items.

The Aghori sect traces its roots to the 14th-century ascetic Keenaram, who is considered their founding father. Keenaram is believed to have attained divine knowledge through intense meditation and is worshipped as a saint in Aghori tradition. His teachings emphasized that Shiva exists in everything, even in what society calls "impure" or "untouchable."

This belief shaped their unique practices of meditating in cremation grounds and using ash and human remains in rituals, symbolizing the acceptance of life’s dualities.

Unlike other sadhus, who often follow strict rules of purity and detachment, Aghoris break taboos to demonstrate that everything in the world is sacred. Their path is not just spiritual but deeply philosophical, challenging the very idea of duality: good and bad, pure and impure.

What makes them even more intriguing is that they rarely appear in public. However, during the Kumbh Mela, a huge religious festival held every 12 years, they come out of their isolation. Why?

Because Kumbh Mela is believed to be a time of great cosmic energy. The festival’s spiritual atmosphere provides an ideal platform for Aghoris to perform rituals, share their wisdom, and connect with devotees seeking blessings.

Their rare public appearance during Kumbh Mela offers a glimpse into their intense devotion and mystical practices, making them one of the most intriguing sights of the festival.
