The Maha Kumbh Mela, the largest religious gathering in the world, began this morning in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, with over 50 lakh devotees taking the first holy dip at the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers. This ancient festival, held once every 12 years, is expected to draw more than 40 crore people, surpassing the population of major countries like the US and Russia.

This year’s event is set to provide an economic boost for Uttar Pradesh, with the state allocating a budget of approximately ₹7,000 crore. Estimates suggest that the Maha Kumbh could generate up to ₹2 lakh crore in economic growth, driven by spending across various sectors such as food, transportation, and religious items. The food and beverage sector alone is expected to contribute ₹20,000 crore, while religious offerings and tourism services could add another ₹40,000 crore to the economy.

The event is also seen as a testament to India’s rich spiritual heritage. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described it as a "very special day" for millions of people who cherish Indian values and culture. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath echoed this sentiment, calling it the largest temporary city on earth, capable of accommodating between 50 lakh to 1 crore devotees at any given time.

The Maha Kumbh, celebrated across four sacred sites in India, is a convergence of faith and culture, with pilgrims engaging in sacred bathing rituals known as Shahi Snans. This act is believed to purify the soul and wash away sins, marking the festival as an essential aspect of Hindu spirituality.
