Under-eye patches have gained popularity as a convenient solution for addressing puffiness, dark circles, and fine lines. However, their effectiveness has been a topic of discussion among skincare professionals.
Dr. Jushya Bhatia Sarin, a dermatologist, likens under-eye patches to a cup of coffee for the eyes: "They wake things up for some time but they don't change the biology." This suggests that while these patches may offer temporary relief, they do not address the underlying causes of under-eye concerns.
The efficacy of under-eye patches largely depends on their ingredients. Hydrogel patches infused with hyaluronic acid can hydrate and plump the skin, providing a refreshed appearance. Vitamin C-infused patches may help reduce mild dullness, making them suitable for pre-event use. Caffeine-based patches are known to reduce puffiness, especially when chilled before application.
However, caution is advised when selecting under-eye patches. Dr. Sarin warns against using patches containing acids or retinol, as the delicate skin under the eyes is prone to irritation. She emphasizes that under-eye patches should complement, not replace, a comprehensive skincare routine that includes eye creams.
In summary, under-eye patches can offer a temporary boost, akin to a quick pick-me-up, but they are not a cure-all for under-eye issues. For lasting results, a consistent skincare regimen tailored to individual needs is essential.
